Biweekly Payment Most mortgage payments are made on a monthly basis. However, arranging to make accelerated biweekly payments can have a dramatic effect on the amount of interest paid over the life of the mortgage and the time it takes to pay off the mortgage in full. If you make 26 mortgage payments per year, this is the equivalent of 13 monthly payments rather than 12. The extra payments are applied directly to your principal balance, thus reducing it as well as the amortization period.
